The National Audit Office is an independent organisation that scrutinises public spending on behalf of Parliament. We audit the accounts of all government departments and agencies, as well as many other public bodies, to ensure that there is as little waste and as much value as possible. As a measure of our effectiveness, we save taxpayers £9 for every £1 we spend on operating costs.
Here in Newcastle, we aim to continue this trend of ensuring that taxpayers get the most for their money. In fact, as a result of financial audit work that’s been transferred from London and Blackpool to Newcastle, we’re now playing a bigger role than every before in making this happen.
Some of the organisations we work with include the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the Department of Health, the Child Support Agency, the Forestry Commission, and the Department for Work and Pensions. Along with planning and carrying out audits on public organisations such as these, we handle queries from Parliament and the media, host conferences, make presentations to Audit Committees and run one of the largest training firms in the Northeast.
During the summer of 2007, the NAO have had teams looking at topical issues such as the management of flood defences and introduction of the Home Information Packs (HIPs), major issues of concern to the public requiring examination and analysis.
We live and work in a rapidly changing environment and the NAO has to be able to respond accordingly.
