Job Details

Are you an experienced qualified accountant/auditor who is keen to further develop your skill set by joining our team? This role offers a unique insight, delivering financial and performance audits to help us ensure over £40 billion of public money in Scotland is spent properly and provides value for money.

The last few years have seen unprecedented change in Scotland, the UK and internationally; with more change to come and a fair amount of uncertainty, public audit has never been more important.

At Audit Scotland we recognise our people are our biggest asset, supporting your development and ensuring this is a happy and enjoyable place to work. We offer a competitive package that aims to look after your health and wellbeing, work-life balance, along with the money in your pocket.

Overall purpose of the role

You will conduct and manage complex financial, performance and best value audit work. You will make audit judgements, oversee and manage the work of the team and deliver our audits to a world-class standard. You’ll interface with clients and stakeholders, providing assurance which helps support improvement and focus upon what’s important.

How can you help us?

As one of our senior members of staff, you’ll inspire others by:

  • Leading on planning and delivering audits or key audit areas, to time, cost and quality.
  • Working with colleagues to decide the breadth and depth of auditing and coordinating the work of staff across the audit.
  • Making professional, evidence-based judgements and recommendations.
  • Drafting clear, authoritative, concise audit outputs and supporting senior leaders in promoting our work externally.
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with officers at audited bodies and appropriate stakeholders.
  • Contributing to the management of Audit Scotland by participating in corporate activities.

We are keen that you continue to progress your career with us and once you have demonstrated your expertise you can expect to take on increased responsibilities including:

  • Responsibility for all elements of managing an audit, including resourcing, cost monitoring (and taking appropriate action), impact work and supporting media enquiries.
  • Providing leadership and line management which builds capacity and resilience in the team whilst motivating, supporting and developing people to achieve their full potential.
  • Presenting and promoting audit outputs and findings at the highest client and stakeholder level e.g. the Scottish Parliament or Accounts Commission; governing boards, audit committees or external stakeholder conferences.
  • Identifing, building and maintaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders at senior levels.

Specific knowledge and experience...

You must be a fully qualified accountant (CIPFA, ICAS, other CCAB, CIMA or equivalent). You will preferably have practical experience of delivering high-quality audits; ideally in a public sector environment. But most important is that you can demonstrate the professionalism, financial expertise and enquiring mind necessary to be a successful auditor.

You are self aware, confident in your own abilities, can plan and manage own work. You have well developed analytical skills and the ability to convert your analysis into clear judgements backed up by useful recommendations for improvement on time and within cost. You know how to work seamlessly within an audit team and help to bring out the best in your colleagues, mentoring and coaching where necessary.

Great benefits..

Your work-life balance is important to us, so we have a clear commitment to a whole range of flexible working options, including flexi-time giving you freedom about where and when you start and finish work. We also have a generous holiday entitlement of 42 days a year including public holidays.

We offer a local government defined-benefit, career average pension scheme along with a package that aims to look after your professional development and the money in your pocket. You’ll find more on our full range of benefits along with more on who we are and what we do on our careers site.

We employ around 280 staff in a wide variety of roles, working from our headquarters in Edinburgh city centre and across Scotland. We’re different, modern and have an open culture. Our people have the flexibility, autonomy and freedom they desire to make a difference in their work.

Company

We're Scotland’s public sector auditor, independent of Government - we employ around 280 talented professionals who know that their work helps ensure the efficient delivery of public services in Scotland. We all share a belief that public money (around £40bn) should be spent wisely, knowing our work makes a real difference to the lives of Scotland’s people.

New and increasing responsibilities mean we need to grow, making sure we have the capacity to deliver exceptional service. It also means we are changing the ways in which we work with lots of opportunities for staff to develop new skills and get involved in new areas of work. And we’re looking for talented, experienced professionals to come and join us.

We have a number of career opportunities at professional, lead professional and senior managerial levels that will offer you the chance to be part of a team that helps create a better Scotland.

We’re looking for a range of backgrounds and experiences so we can combine the very best expertise across a range of disciplines. Of course, experience of financial or performance auditing is valuable, but not everyone who joins us needs to have this before they arrive - we offer excellent opportunities for learning and development once you are here. We also place a real emphasis on effective people management, enabling and engaging individuals and teams to make a great contribution.
