Job Summary and Responsibilities

Essex County Council (ECC) is one of the largest and most dynamic local authorities in the UK, serving a population of 1.5 million residents and has a successful track record of delivering complex transformational change. We have an ambitious transformation agenda – we are changing the way we think, the way we work, and the ways in which we deliver our services. We are committed to becoming a place where individuals, partners and communities feel proud to play their role and genuinely want to belong.

We are seeking two high calibre Senior Auditors to join our Internal Audit and Counter Fraud Team. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a busy and proactive team within a large and complex organisation.

You will support the Strategic Audit Manager, Counter Fraud Manager and Lead Auditor in the delivery of our internal audit and counter fraud activity within the Council and to our external clients, by undertaking risk based audits and providing timely advice and guidance on new initiatives and developments.

You will be working with stakeholders at all levels and will need the ability to develop productive and positive working relationships in order to achieve practical outcomes (i.e. value-adding and proportionate recommendations for improvements).

We are looking for dynamic, highly motivated and effective team players. The ideal applicants will have substantial internal audit experience and a proven track record of delivering complex internal audit work.

Job Purpose

The Senior Auditor will support the delivery of internal audit and counter fraud activity within the Council and to external clients. Responsible for undertaking complex risk based audits, the Senior Auditor will make proportionate and appropriate recommendations to improve the internal control environment, effectively communicating findings and recommendations to auditees, including Senior Leaders. The role will provide advice and guidance on internal controls, risk management and governance arrangements. The Senior Auditor will also be responsible for occasional assignment management of junior audit staff.

Knowledge, skills and experience

  • CMIIA, PIIA or CCAB qualified with substantial audit experience, including evidence of innovative use of audit techniques. Evidence of continuing professional development through the relevant professional body and expert knowledge in relevant professional area.
  • Ability to self-manage and manage assignments including occasional staff management.
  • Significant internal audit experience within a complex organisation.
  • Qualification certificates should be brought to interview.
