Principal Risk Adviser
Waverley Court

Salary: GBP44,934 - GBP53,781
Hours: 36 per week

The Principal Risk Adviser role is part of the Council's second line Corporate Risk Management team.

The role will involve working closely with the Council's Chief Risk Officer and the existing Principal Risk Adviser to support a refresh of the Council's operational risk management framework, and (once implemented) providing ongoing support to first line service teams in a 'critical friend' capacity to ensure that the framework is consistently and effectively applied, with risks accurately identified; assessed; recorded; mitigated; and escalated (where appropriate) in line with the Council's risk appetite.

This will be achieved through attendance at divisional and directorate risk committees to share knowledge of new and emerging risks and provide constructive challenge (where appropriate) to ensure that all significant risks are escalated for consideration at the Corporate Leadership Team risk committee.

The role will also involve driving a strong risk culture and awareness across the Council through delivery of training and provision of guidance and ongoing assurance to confirm the completeness of risk flows across the Council into the Corporate Leadership Team risk register.

The Corporate Risk Team is also responsible for maintaining Corporate Leadership Team risk register that is presented to the Council's Governance, Risk, and Best Value Committee for review and scrutiny by Elected Members. The new risk adviser will support the Chief Risk Officer with this and other committee reporting processes.

The successful candidate will have the following academic / professional qualifications:

  • Educated to degree level or have relevant equivalent risk management experience (essential)
  • Post graduate qualification from the Institute of Risk Management or alternative professional body (desirable)
  • An expert level of knowledge and understanding of the Institute of Internal Auditors Three Lines Model.
  • A strong understanding of internal audit and the connectivity between risk management frameworks and internal audit assurance
