Job Details

At HSE, we work with one goal in mind – to help keep Britain’s workforce safe and healthy. As an independent regulator, our work touches virtually every sector of UK industry. We don’t just inspect workplaces and implement the law, we campaign for better H&S practice, craft and review guidance and regulations, and produce crucial research and statistics.

Maintaining confidence in our regulatory activities depends on assuring quality. As a result we have set up a new Business Assurance Team with responsibility for developing and implementing an assurance framework, based on the Three Lines of Defence Model. This is your opportunity to help shape a high-quality, responsive and efficient second-line assurance function in support of our Accounting Officer, Directors, Board and Committees.

The role

Your expertise will drive improvement at all levels across HSE. Working within either Corporate Assurance or Regulatory Assurance, you’ll advise senior leaders on what good control looks like and help to build the appropriate framework for control and compliance. As your career develops, you’ll have the opportunity to move between teams but, at every stage, you’ll work in an integrated, consistent way, sharing knowledge and ideas.

We’ll also look to you to seek out ways to improve and innovate. For example, as HSE’s work to become the Building Safety Regulator (BSR) progresses, you will have the opportunity to advise on integrating effective control and assurance mechanisms into our new processes.

Your background

This is an exciting opportunity for ambitious and experienced assurance professionals to help shape the future of a growing, national organisation. Holding a recognised professional audit or accountancy qualification (CCAB bodies, CMIAA or MIAA), you’ll have expert-level knowledge of assurance or audit reviews, including the ability to determine appropriate testing strategies, and identify and test relevant controls.  Highly organised, you’re also an analytical thinker and a practised problem-solver.

You’ll understand how to engage effectively with colleagues and to work in a collaborative and inclusive way. At the same time, you’ll have the drive and resilience to persuade and influence senior stakeholders and colleagues to adopt different ways of improving controls.  A consultative, pragmatic and proportionate approach to sharing your expertise is key: your conversations will always be informed by a good understanding of the operational impact of what we do.

Rewards

There’s a lot to look forward to here beyond the generous Civil Service pension and our commitment to flexible working. We put a high value on ongoing personal and professional development and offer access to learning opportunities tailored to your role. You can also expect annual leave of least 25 days.

Our work affects people’s lives across the UK, and it’s important that our teams reflect the diversity of the society we work to protect. So we look for people to bring different skills, perspectives and experience from all walks of life, and particularly welcome BAME, disabled and LGBT+ applicants, currently underrepresented in this discipline within HSE.

Please submit your CV, with a suitability statement of up to 1250 words, outlining relevant experience and explaining how you meet the requirements of the role.
