Main purpose

As we continue to implement our new strategy and organisational development plan, our Audit Managers will play a key role in making sure we achieve our objectives and deliver high quality external audit work to support effective accountability and scrutiny. Internally, they will lead our teams and people and role model behaviours and ways of working to support us become an exemplar organisation.

Taking the lead for a large central government department or a range of public organisations operating in the same sector, the successful candidate will manage and motivate their financial audit teams to deliver audit work that is both high quality and delivers insight to help improve public services.

Our work auditing £1 trillion of public expenditure and income gives us great insight into how government manages its money. Our ambition is to make greater use of this insight to help improve the management of public finances and risks to delivering public services. You will work with your Director to draw on the NAO’s knowledge hubs and centres of expertise to identify opportunities to add real value for the organisations in your portfolio.


Responsibilities

  • Mentoring and coaching your teams to deliver high quality audits, making finely balanced, future-proof and technical audit judgements;
  • Work with government organisations to improve financial reporting across the public sector;
  • Be a valuable source of knowledge on how well public resources are used and how the performance of public services can be improved in your portfolio, and make insightful and practical recommendations to help government organisations improve;
  • Support the work of the Committee of Public Accounts and other select committees by supporting accountability through financial reporting;
  • Contribute to the development of our approach to financial audit through our Audit Transformation Programme, supporting improvements in our audit methodology, audit software, use of financial data, and operational working practices

Skills required

We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate expertise and significant experience of delivering external financial audit work across a challenging portfolio of clients in a regulated environment. Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate their ability to build strong working relationships and influence positive change

Essential skills and experiences:

  • Relevant financial qualification (CCAB) with recent post-qualification experience in delivering external audit in line with ISAs
  • Exceptional audit project management skills, able to deliver high quality audit work across a range of clients to competing deadlines while protecting the welfare of our people
  • Strong relationship management and influencing skills to maximise the influence of our work with external clients and stakeholders
  • Collaborative, engages well with colleagues at all levels, and invests in their development and the wider success of the organisation.
  • Strong people management skills including the ability to lead, develop and motivate diverse teams and support all colleagues to deliver great work and achieve their potential
  • A strong commitment to their own self development and to delivering the NAO’s strategic objectives

Desirable skills and experience:

  • Responsible Individual status, or the ability to acquire RI status within 1 year
  • Experience of public sector or charity audits
  • Experience in implementing and embedding transformational change in financial audit methodologies, software and use of data
  • Working in a Centre of Expertise that provides assurance over complex transactions and balances

Educational requirements:

  • CCAB (ACCA,CAI,CIPFA,ICAEW,ICAS) qualified, or international equivalent

Salary: £62,755 - £81,857 (London) / £56,536 - £71,657 (Newcastle)

Our roles are based at either our London office or our Newcastle office, with travel to client sites across the UK as required. We are following Public Health England’s advice and taking all necessary steps to minimise the risks to our colleagues, their families and the wider public. Our systems are designed to be operated remotely and the majority of our staff are working from home at present.

Nationality Requirements:

UK nationals, nationals of Commonwealth countries who have the right to work in the UK, nationals from the EU, EEA or Switzerland with (or eligible for) status under the European Union Settlement Scheme (EUSS)
