Job Details

The UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) is seeking a Data Licensing Compliance Executive to provide vital support ensuring that UKHO’s intellectual property is not used in unauthorised ways and that UKHO (and its global suppliers) are compensated accordingly in the event of an infringement.

UKHO is an executive agency, sponsored by the Ministry of Defence. We work with a wide range of data partners to chart the world's oceans in order to develop and serve world leading software and data solutions to commercial shipping companies, navies and maritime organisations. UKHO’s intellectual property comprises database rights, trademarks, and copyright (both for paper and digital products and services).

The Data Licensing Compliance Executive is part of the Licensing, Channel and Partner Programmes Team. The team’s vision is to enable the UKHO and its commercial channels to compete successfully in their markets, achieve shared business goals and offer excellent service to their customers. The Data Licensing Compliance Executive plays a key role in the team supporting the Data Licensing Compliance Manager to minimise the number and scale of intellectual property infringements, mitigating the corporate risk of loss of revenue and loss of trust of data suppliers. Their key responsibilities include:

  • Working with internal stakeholders and external customers to identify infringement of intellectual property rights
  • Reviewing the products and services offered within UKHO’s commercial channels and hardware manufacturers
  • Carrying out audits of those who are licensed (and not licensed) to use data owned or managed by the UKHO
  • Resolving infringements and recovering revenue as quickly as possible, using litigation as a last resort
  • Gathering evidence to support action against those who have breached or infringed intellectual property that the UKHO owns or manages

The ideal candidate may not have worked in the maritime industry, they may have worked in the performing arts or publishing industry; or perhaps they will have worked for a global brand managing the compliance and terms of use for supply of a digital product or service.

This role has a technical/IT focus, and the post holder will be expected to be involved in auditing UKHO’s commercial channels and may need to assess their products (including hardware devices) and services to assure UKHO they are operating within their licensed conditions. Knowledge of the technology used to store, protect, and share digital data (including standards such as S57, S63 and S52) is essential.

In return

UKHO is a great place in which to explore your career potential. While our projects are career-defining, the work/life balance that we can offer you is equally exceptional. From flexitime, flexible working, an award-winning office environment and a generous annual leave allowance of 34.5 days including public holidays (increasing to 39.5 after 5 years’ service), the opportunities open to you here are hard to beat.
