Job Details

Become a trusted adviser on risk at a unique organisation that keeps patients safe across the nation.

The General Medical Council (GMC) helps to protect patients and improve medical education and practice in the UK by setting standards for students and doctors. We support them in achieving (and exceeding) those standards, and take action when they are not met.

As a Risk Manager you’ll work closely with colleagues across the organisation to enable the effective operation of the GMC’s risk management framework. You will play a key role in supporting key processes and systems for managing risks and opportunities as well as providing training, coaching and advice to staff. You will develop a detailed understanding of what the many functions of the GMC do and how these deliver on our statutory functions, and Corporate Strategy.

Working within a small and friendly team, you will advise on best practice risk management. With a unique ‘birds eye’ view across the wider organisation, you’ll play a key role in acting as a source of advice to Senior Management on emergent trends from threat and opportunity management practices within the GMC and across the broader health and regulatory environment. You’ll also act as a local source of expertise on risk and opportunity management for staff.

We’ll expect you to have a track record in risk management and the ability to apply relevant tools and techniques to ensure that risk is appropriately identified, assessed, mitigated and monitored.  You’ll demonstrate a host of appropriate skills and knowledge - from producing written reports to verbal presentations to the Senior Management Team. Crucially, you’ll need the intellectual and analytical skills to understand complex issues around medical regulation – ‘joining the dots’ - and the strategic and creative flair necessary to identify risks and generate practical solutions. Excellent communication and relationship building skills will be at the heart of your success.

In return, you’ll benefit from being part of an organisation that is genuinely committed to its people.  We offer an attractive salary and benefits package.

The GMC values diversity and has made a public commitment to processes and procedures that are fair, objective, transparent and free from discrimination.

We strongly believe that diversity of background and experience contributes to a broader collective perspective that will consistently lead to us being a better regulator. We are working hard to increase the diversity of our staff, and also the diversity of those we work with wherever we can and we would actively encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds to apply.
