Job Details

Help us protect the UK with your data protection and governance knowledge.

The work of Border Force is important to everyone in the country. As a law enforcement arm of the Home Office, we protect the nation by overseeing UK border security. This includes counter terrorism, immigration, and customs, and as such, our work is deeply interesting. It is vital that we uphold the highest standards across everything that we do, and we apply the same standards to our own internal activities. As such, we are focused on reducing the threat of insider activity within Border Force, so we have devised the Insider Threat and Integrity team which makes up our anti-corruption function. Join us in this fascinating work, and you will find an unparalleled challenge.

In this newly devised role, you will have a great deal of autonomy as you work with two key teams. Firstly, the Integrity and Projects team has responsibility for implementing insider threat initiatives, while the risk identification team assess potential risks and vulnerabilities that may leave Border Force staff open to being compromised. A large amount of personal data is utilised by the teams, so it is therefore vital that information assets are being handled in-line with the relevant legislation and regulations.

With the scope to build a network of data protection and information security specialists, we will look to you to handle all data protection issues within the team. You will advise the team on their data protection responsibilities, purposes for processing, seeing to it that we are complying with the relevant standards and that our practises exceed current guidance. Identifying areas where we currently have weaknesses, you will implement the relevant measures to fill these gaps, and you will consolidate all data protection controls so that we are watertight in our approach. This will include advising on governance expectations and the interpretation of legislation for future anti-corruption initiatives, so there is great scope to get involved in a wide raft of projects.

Within this fast-paced team, we will expect you to lead on drafting data protection impact assessments, subject access requests, privacy notices, and data sharing agreements. You will therefore excel with us if you have a background in delivering data protection advice and assurance, ideally within a law enforcement environment (though this is desirable rather than essential). With experience of establishing data protection and information governance, and managing data flows, data maps and processes, you will be comfortable working at a senior level, and you will have excellent communication skills. Underpinning every decision and recommendation with evidence, you will have an exceptional knowledge of GDPR, the DPA and LED. Crucially, you will have the capacity to always see the bigger picture, working flexibly in order to constantly improve the service that we are offering – so you will be capable of making effective decisions, even when under pressure.

In turn, we can offer the chance to get involved in fascinating projects that ultimately benefit the wider population. Our team are friendly and passionate about their work, and this results in a working environment that is both fun and supportive. With ongoing training and development opportunities, and a generous benefits package, we are confident that you will thrive as a member of Border Force.
