Non-acute care is offered through various affiliates, including the Thompson House for rehabilitation and skilled nursing services, and the Home Care organizations.

Position Summary

The Risk Manager is responsible for the Clinical Risk Management activi ties at Norwalk Hospital . The activities include the identification, evaluation and mitigation of loss expo sures. The Risk Manager identi fies , analyze s and act s upon actual and potential exposures to the organization with a goal of improved patient safety and protection of the organization s assets. This is also accomplished through education and collabora tion with all levels of the organization.

Specific Responsibilities

Proactive Risk Identification and Prevention (Risk Assessments and SWOT analysis)

Facilitate S afety Event R eview T eam (SERT) in coordination with Quality .

Review all reports of risk incidents on a timely basis and evaluate s them to identify those that have actual or potential patient injury and follow up as necessary.

Interact with patients and families on complaints of substandard care, injury and other concerns in collaboration with nursing, physicians, managers and Patient Advocates.

Ensures the thorough review of medical discrepancies, analysis of data and follow up actions to improve patient care and patient safety .

Collect and analyze risk data and complete Risk Management reports to present to the appropriate managers and committees.

Investigate incidents/adverse events to identify potential or actual claims and report them to the Claims Counsel .

Contribute to the development of policies and processes related to Risk Management

Educate staff and physicians on Risk Management strategies to mitigate loss and improve reporting in a just culture. Develop an education plan in collaboration with Education Department utilizing classroom training, internet and other techniques.

Collaborate with Quality, Patient Sa fety and Patient Advocates to en sure that incidents are properly reported to regulatory agencies as required. Participate in committees dedicated to improving patient, employee and visitor safety and satisfaction. Assist with RCA process when appropriate and/or requested by Quality/Patient Safety.

Rounds on patient units and departments to demonstrate that the risk manager is an accessible and approachable resource for physicians, nurses, managers and other personnel.

Collaborate with the collection of information requested from legal counsel and internal claims counsel .

Entry of Potentially Compensable Events ( PCEs ) into claims management system and conduct and document initial investigation .

Review loss runs and provide input on incidents, claims and suits to ensure lessons learned can be taken back to local site and system learnings can be put in place .

Experience

Specifications :

3-5 years minimum experience in health care required. RN with Risk Management experience in acute care setting strongly preferred .

Education

Baccalaureate preferred - Equivalent work experience may be considered

Training

Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management ( CHPRM ) preferred
