Digital Support and Innovation (DSI) sits within HMRC’s wider Fraud Investigation Service (FIS) responsible for the department’s civil and criminal investigation work. FIS ensures that HMRC has an effective approach to taking on the most serious tax evasion and fraud.

Working across Law Enforcement and government, DSI provides investigative tools and covert techniques to front-line investigations and works with key partners to develop and provide access to new technology and systems to enable investigators to respond to serious and complex tax evasion and crime.

Job description

HMRC's Cyber & Digital Forensics (C&DF) play an integral role in Her Majesty's Government's fight against serious and organised crime, supporting investigations totalling hundreds of millions of pounds each year. This requires a specialist network and technology, which the Infrastructure team is responsible for supporting.

As C&DF grow, so does the need for Infrastructure support. The Infrastructure Higher Officer role is an amazing opportunity for any forward thinking and focused individual who has a passion for technology.

The primary responsibility of this role is to support all technology underpinning C&DF business as usual activity. This supports Investigators as they capture, investigate and analyse forensic evidence, extracted from digital media devices that have been, or are suspected of being, used in the commission of crime.

Training:

In this role you will have a chance to train and become qualified, gaining industry leading infrastructure specialist certifications. You will achieve AWS Associate certification and have a pathway to AWS Professional certification as well as have exposure to relevant SANS training modules. 

You will need to complete a (TAP) Training & Assessment Period of 6 months.

Responsibilities

As a member of the HMRC Fraud Investigation Service, Digital Forensic Infrastructure Team, you will:

  • Play a leading role in the management of assigned Digital Forensic Infrastructure services and technologies
  • Work with a range of external suppliers and IT subject matter experts when required, that will often involve tactical responses, delivered at pace, whilst complying with the standards required by the criminal justice system.
  • Have strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify, take responsibility and the initiative for resolving problems and applying root cause analysis techniques
  • Manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Work as part of a skilled team sharing ideas, but also take the initiative and work independently with little supervision

Essential Criteria:

  • Demonstrable experience across multiple Microsoft platforms such as Windows Server 2012(R2), 2016. Windows 10.
  • Understanding of network technologies such as DNS, DHCP and protocols around TCP/IP.
  • Experience in providing support across the extensive Microsoft stack and related infrastructure services, such as Active Directory, Clustering, System Centre etc.
  • CompTIA A+ qualification, or experience with general hardware support.
  • Strong written ability and communication skills.
  • You must hold or be able to obtain SC security clearance.

Desirable Criteria:

  • ITIL Foundation Qualification or demonstrable understanding of ITIL Lifecycle Standards.
  • Degree or degree-level qualification in Information Technology or a related field and/or practical experience supporting an IT environment. Qualifications and certifications held may include (but are not limited to): MCSA, MCSE, CCNA, ITIL Foundation, APM Foundation, CompTIA A+.
  • Knowledge of scripting PowerShell, JSON, Terraform
  • Exposure of cloud technologies such as Azure and AWS and also to virtualisation technologies, such as VMware, Hyper-V.

Technical skills

We'll assess you against these technical skills during the selection process:

  • A presentation to deliver an understanding of network technologies such as DNS, DHCP and protocols around TCP/IP.
  • Technical strength-based questions based on presentation given to evidence essential technical criteria
