Responsibilities

We are seeking a creative and collaborativ e Director of Sustainability with a passion for community driven placemaking . This individual is detail oriented with the ability to learn and thrive in a fast-paced environment.

The Director - Sustainability will lead and manage Related Beal's strategic direction and execution of Related Beal's corporate sustainability strategy, creating value through achievement of environmental and social outcomes. The positon is a key member of the corporate, planning, permitting and execution teams and will collaborate with internal stakeholders in construction, development, architecture, planning, and property management, and external stakeholders in the partnership, planning and implementation of multiple corporate and local, state and federal initiatives. This role will champion and administer the company's sustainable design goals for Related Beal's existing and future projects including life science, office, residential, affordable, mixed use and retail developments, and work with project teams on all projects, commencing with site acquisitions. This role will play a key role early in the strategy, design and permitting phases across all projects through development, construction, and operations.

The Director - Sustainability is responsible for creating strategy and leading teams on studying and selecting systems and materials to meet corporate and site sustainability goals. This role will conduct corporate reporting and data analysis to drive building design and identify economically prudent building retrofits. This role will also provide green building expertise and oversight for fit out, retrofit and renovation projects, and will lead and support life cycle cost studies in supporting economically and environmentally informed decisions. This role will administer all green building certification and utility incentive meetings, contracts and processes.

The Director - Sustainability will be required to gain early knowledge of pending regulations and will be an active participant as needed in the discussion and feedback to various stakeholders on regulations and best practices to achieve climate and resiliency goals. This role will represent Related Beal with outside stakeholders and teams in the synthesis and management of current, future and pending local, state and federal initiatives and regulations. This role will be an active participant in organizations and working groups as needed for input and feedback on critical goals. This role will interface closely with sustainability teams throughout Related Companies to learn, manage and coordinate best practices underway throughout other offices and around the country. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Lead all sustainability initiatives in partnership with Related Beal's vertically integrated teams to drive and implement Related Beal's sustainability goals.
  • Facilitate the integrated design process to advance environmental and economic performance of Related Beal's projects in partnership with Related Beal's vertically integrated teams in the upfront planning and execution of all Related Beal's developments.
  • Continual analysis of Related Beal's multi-faceted sustainability goals and benchmarking including early planning for key drivers of goals for best practices implementation from acquisition through completion and ongoing operations of all sites.
  • Communications of Related Beal's sustainability strategies and goals to internal and external stakeholders in various capacities, including project related and general / corporate engagements.
  • Manage climate change strategy and developing greenhouse gas emissions targets and renewable energy goals.
  • Lead energy efficiency and green building strategies for new and retrofit development projects.
  • Champion a culture of sustainability through ongoing internal communications and education.
  • Work with various external stakeholders and organizations to participate in early conversations on key drivers of enhanced practices.
  • Build effective partnerships with external organizations to support Related Beal's sustainability efforts.
  • Manage Related Beal's interface and compliance with all city, state and federal environmental statuses and regulations.
Contract / Budget / Documentation Management Responsibilities
  • Develop, deploy and manage budgets for sustainability initiatives.
  • Solicit bids and select consultants/contractors for LEED and energy consulting, testing and commissioning.
  • Manage the development of LEED documentation required of Related Beal as property developer, owner and/or manager.
  • Oversee contract documentation and invoicing for LEED consultants and contractors
  • Contribute to the ongoing collection, management and analysis of all quantitative and qualitative information to be included in the financial and nonfinancial disclosures.

Qualifications
  • Minimum 10 y ears of experience , with at least 5 years of demonstrated experience in managing sustainability programs.
  • Bachelor's degree in real estate, energy, sustainability management, environmental affairs, mechanical engineering or related field .
  • Regulatory experience with City of Boston Article 37/Carbon Neutral filing, Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act (MEPA) and other local, state and federal approvals and trade standards (BERDO, ASHRAE, LEED, etc.).
  • Technical experience with green building design and working knowledge of the LEED rating system with demonstrated LEED experience (at least two LEED projects).
  • Energy efficiency expertise including the electrification of systems, envelope performance, on-site renewable energy and renewable energy credits.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Must be detail oriented with strong organizational skills
  • Ability to multi-task, shift direction easily, be proactive
  • Ability to work well under pressure and within a fast-pace work environment
  • Diligent, accountable and able to follow direction well
