About us

Here at the HMICFRS, we assess the effectiveness and efficiency of police forces and fire and rescue services. Independent of government and the services we inspect, we ask the questions the public wish to have answered, and produce major reports which shine a light on a wide range of issues. Join us, and you’ll have the opportunity to make a real difference to the quality of local services and the lives of the general public. We’re a unique organisation with staff seconded or loaned from across the civil service, police forces and fire and rescue services. We’re also a rewarding place to work, and take great pride in the quality of work we achieve and the opportunities we create for our staff. You can find out more about HMICFRS on our website via the 'Apply' button and see some of our recent reports.

About the role

As a SEO Analyst with HMICFRS, you’ll join the Insight portfolio, and lead a range of projects within our Analytics and Research or Analytical Insight teams. Specialising in either Statistics or Research, you’ll support a variety of inspection activities on high profile topics, and use Power BI to produce interactive dashboards to inform inspections. You’ll lead on at least one inspection question for policing, improve our understanding of the quality of the data, and work with the policy team to produce and develop the dashboard.

But your work won’t stop here – you’ll also provide inspirational leadership for your team, line managing a small number of junior analysts, and matrix managing other analysts and professionals across the portfolio. Consulting with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, briefing inspection staff and senior leaders on data and analysis, and responding to press queries on published reports, you’ll also help to deliver core outputs for our inspection programme. These will include pre-inspection insights, key lines of enquiry and inspection reports.

About you

This role would be suited to someone with a background in the use of data and analytical software, ideally including Excel and Power Bi – however, if you don’t have this experience, we’ll provide full training. An excellent organiser, planner and manager of your own work, you’ll be proactive and ready to take the initiative, and possess the ability to work under pressure and remain focused even when things don’t go smoothly. And as a strong team player, you’ll be willing to support other team members and improve how things are done.

If your focus is on statistics, you’ll be experienced in the oral and written presentation of data and information, and possess the ability to identify key trends in data while adding value to analysis. Research specialists should have experience of using research techniques and methodologies, the ability to apply these to small scale research projects, and the skills to use both qualitative and quantitative approaches to their work.

It would be an advantage if you’ve worked with police or fire service data in multi-disciplinary teams, and membership of GSG/GORS would also be desirable, but we can support you to become badged.

Your rewards

In addition to an excellent salary and Civil Service pension, we’re committed to investing in our people and providing them with great opportunities to maximise their skills and achieve their potential. We offer a wide range of work-based training and development, including access to coaching and mentoring, and five days volunteering per year.

The diversity of our people is a real asset to HMICFRS. We’re committed to creating a welcoming, inclusive workplace where everyone is able to bring their whole selves to work ad perform at their best. We particularly welcome applications from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic candidates and people with disabilities, as they are currently under-represented at this grade level. Appointments will be made on merit on the basis of fair and open competition. If you want to find out more about our work, please visit our website via the 'Apply' button.
