Embark on a fascinating career in the regulatory sector!

Sitting within the Department for Business & Trade, the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) is an exceptional place in which to pursue/further your career.

As a regulatory body, our mission is simple. We are focused on protecting people, places and the environment from product-related harm, and in the process we help UK businesses thrive. We do this by tackling market failures, influencing behaviour and driving positive action, which means that every UK resident and business can buy and sell products with absolute confidence that they are investing in a safe and reliable product. Join our creative and innovative team (who also enjoy a well-respected position within the organisation) and you could play a central role in this interesting work.

In this fantastic entry-level role within the OPSS Enforcement Team, you will have the opportunity to combine hands-on work with your studies for a Level 4 Regulatory Compliance Officer Apprenticeship qualification. Working between three teams, you will gain exposure to a huge array of projects, with the scope to focus on your key area of interest later in your career. Every day will challenge you to think about how you can help businesses comply with our expectations – and when they do not meet our unwavering standards, we will show you how we take enforcement action.

For you, this means the chance to support on some deeply interesting enforcement cases. Investigating issues and complaints, you will check products and businesses to determine whether they pose a risk to people and places. Communicating with these businesses to help them raise their standards, you will have the support of senior level colleagues and other partner organisations to tackle those who do not comply with your guidance. Making use of technical information, you will write reports on your inspections and projects, you will also be keen to share information across the OPSS so that we can collectively make an even bigger impact.

This is a great opportunity to join our inclusive and friendly team. We want you to bring your whole self to work, and know that you will be supported as your develop your career. You will therefore excel with us if you share our determination to work collaboratively, all while doing nationally-important work. Crucially, you will be a naturally curious and detail-focused individual who has the confidence to constructively challenge and ask the relevant questions during difficult conversations. With the ability to understand technical information including legislation and product information, you will be capable of balancing the needs of multiple projects without ever missing a deadline.

From a practical point of view, you will be aged 16 or over, and not currently in full-time education or in receipt of funding for other learning programmes. We will also not be able to accept applications from anyone who is already working on a similar qualification in enforcement or regulation at the same level or higher. With either resident status or having been consistently in the UK or EEA for 3+ years, you will be IT proficient with the ability to use Microsoft Office.

Above all else you will be passionate about developing a career in the regulatory sector – and in turn, we look forward to putting your career on an exceptional trajectory.
