Help support the delivery of aid to the most vulnerable in Afghanistan.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) offers a unique environment in which to pursue a fascinating career path. And as a member of our Operational Excellence (OpEx) Team within the Afghanistan team, you will be at the heart of our complex yet vital work. The Afghanistan team provides humanitarian and basic services programmes to millions of vulnerable people who are currently living in Afghanistan. Against the backdrop of a highly unstable environment which changes constantly, the OpEx team is tasked with ensuring that our programmes comply with the rules for the delivery of aid and meets our obligations to UK taxpayers to spend well which in turn means that our aid reaches the most vulnerable. You will play an instrumental part in this as you support colleagues in the UK, Afghanistan and Pakistan, verifying that we are meeting all fraud and safeguarding requirements relating to this work.

Each day will present you with a wide range of challenges, as you will help teams make evidence-based decisions that encompass the principles of good risk management. You will support colleagues to manage cases with partners and ensure that lessons learned are captured and fed into future cross-team learning for Programme Teams. Taking on proactive planning and analysis work, you will provide assurance to senior leadership including preparing and presenting a monthly MI pack, and will see to it that the most current thinking on fraud and safeguarding is embedded in everything from annual reviews through to business cases. You will also have the capacity to react quickly to emerging situations, and as such you will support the teams in managing aid diversion and safeguarding cases, constantly reiterating the importance of following escalation practices.

Providing corporate and secretariat support where needed, this role will provide you with plenty of variety, plus the chance to develop both your technical and communication skills, so there really is no saying where your career will take you next. To be equal to the challenge, you will therefore need to be a British citizen with exceptional verbal and written communication skills – plus the ability to build great remote relationships and make effective decisions when under pressure. This will include producing easily understood information in a variety of formats, so we will expect you to be confident in the use of Excel, Word and PowerPoint. With the confidence to collaborate with colleagues at all levels, you will have some experience of providing secretariat support, so it goes without saying that you will be an organised individual with a can-do attitude. Essential to this role will be your natural curiosity about what is driving specific behaviours, and how we can tackle complex problems with creative solutions.

If you want to play your part in supporting some of the world's most vulnerable people, and you are interested in the field of safeguarding and fraud, then this could well be the perfect role for you. With immense scope to learn from experienced colleagues, plus the chance to explore the many projects currently underway within the FCDO, we will see to it that your knowledge and skills remain in-line with your ambitions. We can also offer you a competitive benefits package and the chance to adopt a hybrid working pattern.

Apply before 11:55pm on Monday 8 April 2024.
